The spine, being a firm as well as flexible axis of the human body, has many different functions in the whole musculoskeletal apparatus. It holds the trunk upright, it ensures the movement of the head and the upper and lower limbs. Its already extreme burden is worsened with bad habits, such as overloading or unilateral loading on the spine, being overweight, a sedentary lifestyle, a physically demanding profession, etc., all of which give rise to acute or chronic pain. One of the most common problems include intervertebral disc herniation.
The treatment for an intervertebral disc herniation is always individual and depends on many factors. Some types of herniated discs are treated conservatively, others surgically. A herniated disc of the lumbar spine is treated surgically in 12-18% of cases. (Náhlovský, 2006).
